I thought the cottage was beautiful—Ember’s boyfriend lives in a literal castle.

Aleks had whisked me out of bed, we threw on clothes, and then he hurried me off the little island retreat where I’ve been staying for weeks. Now I’m folded up in the corner of the leather couch, chewing at my thumbnail.

“Did the witch bring you to the Vardigah?” Constantine demands.

“The Vardigah?” I ask.

“The dark elves,” Ember supplies.

“I don’t think so.” It’s still all so fuzzy.

“What did they do to you? Do you remember?” Niko asks.

“Bad things.” I suck in a breath, trying to be brave, but the memories are slippery.

“What about Julia?” Constantine asks. “Can you remember her now?” He flicks a look to Niko.

“I… think so?” I’m trying to put all the pieces together, honestly. It’s just a mess inside my head.

“Okay, back up,” Aleks says, but he’s not talking to me. He’s physically backing up everyone who’s crowded around my couch, barraging me with questions. “Give her some space. And half a second to sort this out before you interrogate the shit out of her, okay?”

They all talk at once, but not to me—Aleks is my shield, and I want to kiss him for it. Actually, I want to go back to our island retreat and make mad sexy love to him. Kissing him was like nothing I’ve felt before—it was so pure, so sweet, and yet, at the same time, so hot I was ready to strap him to the bed and have my way with him.
